Meet Leonardo
(April 2026) – Leonardo is just 6 months old, but he has already survived more than most will face in a lifetime. At 18 weeks pregnant, Leonardo’s mom learned that her baby had a severe congenital heart defect. From that day forward, she met with specialists, attended countless appointments, and prepared herself for the complex medical journey ahead. Every step was heavy, but she carried it with unwavering love.
When Leonardo was born, he was rushed straight to the NICU at CHOC Hospital. Doctors confirmed that only half of his heart was functioning — a condition requiring multiple surgeries and lifelong care. Before she could bring him home, his mom completed extensive medical training so she could safely care for him on her own.
Leonardo had his first surgery shortly after birth. In January, he endured a second open heart surgery to repair additional complications, including a leaking valve. The procedure was successful, and today he continues to recover under close medical supervision.
Leonardo’s daily care is intense. He takes multiple medications, receives injections, and participates in at-home physical therapy. Every week, Leonardo and his mom travel long distances for follow up appointments to monitor his heart.
As a single mother, Leonardo’s mom had to stop working to care for him full time. With limited savings and ongoing medical demands, the financial strain has been overwhelming.
